Skupina The Selecter patrila ku kľúčovým predstaviteľom vlny oživenia žánru ska na konci 70. rokov. Išlo o jednu z mála rasovo a rodovo zmiešaných kapiel na vtedajšej scéne. Speváčka Pauline Black vo svojej tvorbe reflektovala témy ako sexizmus, rasizmus či rôzne spoločenské otázky. Ich prvou nahrávkou bola skladba umiestnená na druhej strane singla „Gangsters“ od skupiny The Specials v lete 1979; pôvodne išlo len o projekt Neola Daviesa a Johna Bradburyho (z The Specials), no do konca roka sa sformovala plnohodnotná kapela.
